Once upon a time there was a beetle who loved to tell everyone how fast he could run. “I am the fastest insect in the park,” he would say. His slow and steady friend the snail, tired of hearing him brag, challenged him to a race. “Ha,” the beetle thought to himself, “there is no way a snail could ever win against me.” On the day of the race, all of the insects in the park gathered to watch. The centipede waved a checkered flag to start the race. The beetle zoomed past the starting line as fast as he could, while the snail carefully inched herself forward bit by bit. The beetle cried out “You will never win this race at that slow, slow pace.” Out of breath from running, the beetle eventually reached a small pond of water. He thought, “I have plenty of time. I just will go around the pond.” The beetle sped off on his way. Inch by inch the snail crawled along the path. As she reached the pond, she thought, “It would be much shorter if I could somehow float across the water.” Perhaps I could build a boat. The snail gathered up some leaves, twigs and vine. She fashioned a small boat that helped her glide smoothly across the water of the pond. When she got to the other side, she hopped off the boat and could see all of her friends waiting for her at the finish line. Little by little the snail crept along the path until she crossed the finish line at long last. All of her friends cheered. “Hooray for snail!” they cried. A moment later the beetle came running across the finish line. “I can’t believe you beat me!” he said. “You know,” the snail replied with a smile, “being the fastest isn’t always everything”. “Sometimes if you just slow down for a moment and think about your challenge, you can come up with great solutions.”

On his return journey, Gundwanyana found food in a dustbin and, after eating, finally made his way back to RatAlex. He recounted his harrowing adventure to the other young rats, who admired his bravery and resilience.

Lila was an adventurous nine-year-old with a wild imagination. She loved exploring her small town and often pretended she was on grand adventures. One sunny afternoon, while playing in her grandmother’s attic, she stumbled upon an old, dusty journal hidden beneath a pile of forgotten books.

King of the Heart, is about a young African-American boy named Elrick learning how to understand and manage his emotions. Elrick often feels overwhelmed by feelings like anger, sadness, and joy, but with the guidance of his parents, he discovers that emotions are a natural part of life and can be managed with care and practice. Through tools like a "Feelings Journal," deep breathing, and introspection, Elrick learns to embrace his emotions as visitors in his "kingdom" and develops strategies to handle them. The story encourages self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and resilience, empowering young readers—particularly African-American boys—to see themselves as strong, capable, and in control of their inner worlds.

I am outside on the streets begging for food. Someone walks past me and says “eww.” I then start crying, in the background there is a bread pop up where someone is selling bread. I walk past the bread stand, over to a brick wall. I lean against the wall, and think of a plan. The plan is to do multiple crimes so i can be arrested, I want to be arrested because i will get food and safety in the jail cell. I then go back to my spot where i begged at and slept. Today is the day where i commit crimes, first, i steal some bread, then I spray paint a wall, then i steal again jacket. The cops find me and I’m arrested. I am happy but stressed at the same time. I am now in jail and have air conditioning and food.
