The blast is caused by the heated air expanding rapidly. The air pressure near the center of the blast drops suddenly, creating negative pressure. This causes the air to reverse direction, blowing back in toward the center with great force. The first atomic bomb was detonated in the United States in 1945 at a military test site in Alamogordo, New Mexico.
